June Jones is a head coach once again.
The well-traveled Jones will take charge of the Canadian Football League’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats, the team announced Thursday. He was appointed to the position by the man he replaces, Kent Austin, who also serves as the team’s vice president of football operations.
Bortles, who the Jaguars selected with the third overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, struggled during training camp and through his first two preseason games this year. Marrone said about a week ago that Bortles would have to compete with Chad Henne for the starting job.
Henne got the starting nod Thursday night against the Panthers, and the third preseason game of the year is generally thought of as the “dress rehearsal” for the season. Henne’s outing was unimpressive — in five series in the first half, he went 8 of 14 for 73 yards.
Over seven series in the second half, Bortles went 12 of 16 for 125 yards and one touchdown.
Bortles had something of a breakout season in 2015, but came crashing back to earth last year. He’s started 45 regular-season games in a row for Jacksonville.
While Bortles gets the call for Week 1, nobody will be shocked if he’s pulled in short order. Marrone obviously isn’t enthralled with him as his starter.
Dallas assumed Crawford would turn into an elite pass rusher when it rushed into this contract, which looks to have been a mistake. Crawford at signing tracked with a group of players earning around $5 million a season, and that’s where he still is. He needs to be more productive to make up the large gap between his salary and productivity.

We have another two-part podcast for you on the two biggest offseason stories in the NBA.
First: Paul George leaves Indiana and is traded to Oklahoma City. How are Pacers fans feeling about the breakup? We chatted with SBNation.com’s Whitney Medworth and Indy Cornrows writer Caitlin Cooper about George’s reputation locally and the meager return Kevin Pritchard received for him.
Elite Bud Dupree Jersey
Mikkel Boedker Limited Jersey You can follow Whitney on Twitter at @its_whitney and Caitlin at @C2_Cooper. They also have some … ahem … interesting peanut butter opinions.
Then, we dialed up Friend Of The Pod Michael Pina of Vice Sports to take a deeper look at the Celtics’ coup of landing Gordon Hayward. How much better does this make Boston? Who has to go to create salary-cap space to get Hayward his max contract? Does this vindicate Danny Ainge?
Dirk isn’t leaving Dallas — the belief is that he will sign a new two-year deal with the Mavericks to finish out his contract. He’s still a strong supplemental scorer and a locker room legend. Thank goodness the Mavericks won’t let some team Ewing On The Sonics or Hakeem On The Raptors him.
Wyoming’s finest was a revelation for the Heat as he remade his body and found scoring and playmaking touch that hadn’t been evident in his previous NBA stops. Defense is Johnson’s bread and butter, but he can shoot and slash too and he’s one of the better big man passers available this summer. Miami appears to be aiming toward a more star-level forward with eyes on Hayward and Griffin; that could lead another team to poaching Johnson early in free agency. If not, the Heat will be glad to give him a salary boost to stick around.

The Los Angeles Clippers and head coach Doc Rivers mutually agreed to let Rivers step down from his front office duties with the organization, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Rivers is still the head coach, and Lawrence Frank is now in charge of basketball operations.
Rivers was the Clippers president of basketball operations and head coach since 2013. Even though he will not work in the front office any longer, Wojnarowski reported that Rivers will still have a strong voice in team and organizational decisions.
The Clippers promoted Frank, a former head coach with the Nets and Detroit Pistons, a year ago to handle day-to-day operations in the front office. Rivers and Frank will now have to report to owner Steve Ballmer.
I’m not sure a rookie class picture will ever top this group of legends gathering in front of a brick wall looking like they’re about to play the meanest game of pickup ever.
Authentic Lawrence Taylor Jersey That’s Kobe Bryant with the ball, and Stephon Marbury with his arms folded. Marcus Camby is towering over Marbury to his left, and crouching below is Ray Allen. Antoine Walker is on the outer right, Kerry Kittles is below Steve Nash, Shareef Abdur-Rahim is to Kobe’s right, and John Wallace, Jermaine O’Neal and Walter McCarty round out the featured members of the ’96 draft class.
They have several stars in the primes of their careers, and have been one of the Western Conference’s best teams for a while. But they’ve never gotten to the Finals, and with the Warriors and Spurs still the class of the league, it’s honestly hard to imagine them getting there. They’re probably not going to get past their historically brilliant counterparts by continuing to bank on retreads and guys Rivers once saw have a good game.

After a two-month stretch where Kristaps Porzingis wanted absolutely nothing to do with the New York Knicks, the franchise centerpiece told NBA.com’s Shaun Powell he wants to come back, win games, and focus on a place he calls home.
Authentic Mens Graham Knott Jersey So far it’s been tough in New York, but my journey is only beginning and I hope to stay there my whole career, so as a city we can have some fun and win some games and do something big, he said in Johannesburg, South Africa during his prep for the NBA’s Africa Game on Sunday.
Porzingis’ commitment to the Knicks seemed to waver after Phil Jackson’s exit tour included ushering a frustrating midseason shift to the Triangle Offense, publicly bashing Carmelo Anthony, and eventually fielding trade calls on the 7’3 Latvian shooter. Porzingis even skipped out on his end-of-the-year exit interview with Jackson and spent much of the summer overseas, reportedly ignoring Knicks officials’ attempts to get in contact with him.

There’s a perfect storm of circumstances brewing between Boston’s current place in the NBA hierarchy, its absurd treasure trove of assets, the Cavaliers’ dysfunction, and the threat of James bolting for nothing next summer.
It’s compelling stuff just in seeing what’s NOT there in the data, and suggests that player’s overall performance doesn’t necessarily improve in a contract year. I want to keep reading on this topic to look for more definitive stuff, as I’ve always thought the contract year a very real occurrence.

Mike Glennon is penciled in as the Bears’ starter this season — rookie Mitchell Trubisky even said so after the Bears’ 24-17 loss to the Broncos on Thursday, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. But 2017’s No. 2 pick made a strong case on Thursday for head coach John Fox to keep his options open.
Now he’ll miss the entire 2017 season. With Week 1 looming, the Dolphins had an urgent decision to make at the quarterback position. They answered that question by signing Jay Cutler to a one-year, $10 million deal even before a decision had been made about surgery for Tannehill.
Tannehill finished the 2016 season with 2,995 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions and led the Dolphins to an 8-5 record in his 13 starts.
The Broncos are going to need to find a way to get their players reps while also keeping them healthy. The team has been plagued by injuries this offseason, and just weeks away from the start of the regular season is no time to lose your most valuable guys. Just in the week leading up to this contest, two DEs were carted off the field, Jared Crick (back) and Derek Wolfe (ankle), and rookie WR Carlos Henderson will undergo thumb surgery.
With a new head coach in Kyle Shanahan and a new starting QB in Brian Hoyer, the Niners’ offense has been a bit of a question mark heading into the season. The team’s veteran running backs Tim Hightower and Carlos Hyde are leading the rush game, and bringing some of the young guys up to par.
Far back on the depth chart is undrafted free agent Matt Breida. The rookie led the way in his first NFL preseason game, with the most forced missed tackles (6) on rush attempts in Week 1, per Pro Football Focus. Breida has earned additional reps with the ones and twos as he becomes a bit more battle-tested.

On the final day of Raiders training camp, Marshawn Lynch stepped behind the podium to speak to the media for just the second time since joining the team last April.
The timing of his media appearance is just days after he stirred up some controversy by sitting down during the playing of the National Anthem prior to the team’s preseason opener in Arizona. So, naturally, the question was going to come up to see if he would have anything to say about it. And, as you might expect, Marshawn juked a couple of questions about it.
Game Womens ArDarius Stewart Jersey It’s tough to find these knockdowns in the preseason because there is no access to the proper film. Lucky for me, this week was easy. I’m going with my brother, Mitchell Schwartz, right tackle No. 71 of the Kansas City Chiefs.
He’s on a backside cutoff block. He’s supposed to block the linebacker, but the 49ers defensive lineman is moving with their pressure. Mitch ends up on the nose tackle. Most tackles would try to gain position by swinging their hips around. Not Mitch. His hand placement is impeccable, and he’s running his feet. Notice where he resets his hips just a bit and runs the defender through the whistle for the first disrespectful block of the 2017 NFL season.
Earlier in August, I wrote about Lacy’s potential fit in Seattle, mostly under the belief that his top-tier talent was still there if he could avoid injuries and stay in shape. Obviously we shouldn’t read too much into preseason performances, but the Lacy we’re seeing right now just isn’t good enough, and a far cry from the player I thought would show up.

Next week is the third preseason game, the unofficial dress rehearsal for most teams. It’s going to be a real make-or-break moment for Lacy, because the Seahawks have too many moving parts and roles to figure out in their backfield. They can’t be wasting time on Lacy if he doesn’t have much to offer anymore.
Consider the concept of 256 home runs. It’s a lot of home runs. It’s what John Olerud and Kirk Gibson each hit in their respective 17-year careers. It’s more home runs than Robin Yount, Dusty Baker, Cecil Cooper, or Roberto Clemente hit. Giancarlo Stanton should get there by the end of his season, and it’s taken him eight years of being a confirmed dinger lord to hit even that many. The next home run Buster Posey hits will be the 128th of his career, which means he’s halfway to 256.
Game Kids Xavier Grimble Jersey When Barry Bonds hit his 756th home run, that means he had hit as many as all those players … plus an extra 500 home runs on top. If you take away a homer from Bonds for every one that Clemente hit, he would still be one of the top 20 home run hitters of all time.
I mean, 756 home runs … that’s … I mean, like … come on, right? … [several sustained minutes of stoned chuckling] … bro, for real.
Let’s find another way to describe it, using Stanton up there. The Marlins slugger is on pace for 53 home runs this year, which would give him 261 for his career. That would leave him 495 short of 756 home runs, but the good news is that he’s young. He’ll be 28 in November, and he’s in his prime right now.
And now Thames just might hit 40 homers. Travis Shaw is looking like the steal of the offseason. Domingo Santana and Orlando Arcia are coming into their own, and it’s beautiful to see. Back in March, I mentioned the Brewers were a couple good pitchers away from being sneaky threats to the Cubs. And look at them now: 3? games ahead of the Cubs.
John Jerry Mens Jersey They’re still at least one good pitcher away from being sneaky threats to the Cubs. I know, I know, they’re still in first, but that rotation is held together with twine and tree sap, and the goal should be to nab a pitcher who could be around for a couple years, someone who isn’t a rental.

Carlos Beltran hasn’t played an inning in the outfield for the Astros since mid-May, the center fielder-turned-DH spending all of his time at the plate of late where he has been hitting a semi-concerning .231 (albeit with 11 homers and 35 RBI on the season).
So in honor of the glove outliving its usefulness for its owner and guardian, the Astros decided to have a little bit of fun before their game against the Mariners on Monday by holding an official funeral for Beltran’s mitt in the outfield.

This will be Boston’s second road series against New York this season. The Red Sox are just 1-6 in their last seven games at Yankee Stadium, per the OddsShark MLB Database.
And it’s worked. I witness countless fans light up as it dawns on them that the Marlins man walking toward them is indeed Marlins Man. I see the moment when they realize that if they hold their phone in front of their faces and take a picture, they’ll be in on the joke, or a new member of the club, or whatever it is that Marlins Man commands. They’ll be a part of something that wouldn’t exist without him.
I’m a talking mascot, Leavy says, turning away from the latest group selfie to face me. The Marlins do have a mascot, but it doesn’t talk. I talk.
Before I leave him, Marlins Man tells me to take a picture with him on my phone. I oblige. After we say goodbye, he immediately turns to the person next to him and strikes up a conversation. I turn around when I reach the top of the stairs. They’re taking a selfie.

The suspension of Ezekiel Elliott by the NFL for the first six games of the season certainly impacts the Dallas Cowboys. It also throws up in the air an NFC East that was seemingly tilted in the direction of the Cowboys, the prohibitive favorites to win the division.
While Elliott’s suspension helps the other teams in the NFC East, at least one player isn’t too happy about it: New York Giants safety Landon Collins isn’t giddy to see Elliott on the sidelines, even as his team opens the season against Dallas and won’t have to face the star running back.
Collins explained why he wasn’t pleased to see the Cowboys without Elliott, making his remarks following the Giants preseason opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday night.
“My dad’s been there every step of the way,” Melvin Gordon told the San Diego Union-Tribune in 2015. “That’s what people need to know. He’s not a deadbeat father. He’d die to be here with me right now.”
Gordon has said his father worked him out in drills as a young football player, gave him tips and showed him video of the game’s greatest running backs. The family often sacrificed to send the young Gordon to football activities.
And of course, Bo Gordon was at almost every one of his son’s youth and high school football games. That game-day experience is something he missed out on while in prison.
That will change Sunday, as Bo Gordon and his wife, Carmen, will be on hand when the relocated Chargers host the Seahawks in their first game at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.
“Dad will be in the stands soon,” Carmen Gordon told Union-Tribune. “I can’t imagine. We’ll all probably be crying. It’s going to be something else, and Melvin is going to go off. ???? He’s going to go off because Dad is in the stands. They have a bond.”

Nationals — Injuries have hurt Washington’s lineup, but they have received decent production from Adam Eaton and Trea Turner’s replacements. The bullpen, however, was one area the team has been struggling to get consistent production from all season.
Early additions of Sean Doolittle and Ryan Madson helped quench the panic meter in Washington. But the Nationals weren’t content with the two new relievers from Oakland, so they went out and added Twins All-Star closer Brandon Kintzler on Monday at the deadline.
Victor Hedman Authentic Jersey The Nationals also added Howie Kendrick, who has quietly enjoyed a solid season despite injuries. If Turner and Michael A. Taylor return soon, this team could give the Dodgers some trouble in the postseason.
Astros — Injuries to Carlos Correa and George Springer have spun this team’s needle in the wrong direction, but there was hope from fans that it would add a couple pieces before the trade deadline ended.
Francona said that despite his desire to have members of the organization focus on baseball, many felt the need to check in with him constantly during his time away.
One of them was Mills, who has known Francona since 1977 when they were college teammates at Arizona. They also spent time together with the Phillies and the Red Sox organizations. The two communicated at least twice a day during Francona’s respite.
When you don’t have that extra voice or person to talk to talk to (before, during and after games), it’s a little different, Mills said. The biggest thing was the relief that he was OK, getting stronger every day and back to who he usually is.
