Allen Park — There’s a train of thought, not shared by all, that you shouldn’t draft an interior offensive lineman in the first round of the NFL Draft. Detroit Lions general manager Bob Quinn doesn’t subscribe to that creed.
On the other hand, Georgia’s Isaiah Wynn, a former offensive tackle, is the better fit for a zone scheme, which emphasizes athleticism and getting linemen on the move.
If the Lions doesn’t draft an obvious starting option in the first round, Quinn has stockpiled his roster with versatile options to compete for the opening.
“Joe Dahl has positional flexibility, Kenny Wiggins has position flex, Wesley Johnson, who we signed, has position flex,” Quinn said. “Out of those guys, we have guys who can fill multiple roles and we’re going to put them out there and see the best five.”
The NFL draft’s first round will take place next Thursday.
Stanton said he was excited to have Torres up.
“He’s going to be good, man,” the reigning 2017 National League MVP said. “He is good already.”
Stanton and Torres already share something in common.
Both were highly regarded prospects who made national headlines when they debuted.
When the Yankees promoted Torres on Sunday, just about every major publication ranked him the club’s best prospect. Baseball America ranked him the sixth best prospect in the game. MLB.com had him at No. 5.
Baseball America ranked Stanton the third best prospect in the sport in 2010.
Spurs forward Kyle Anderson admits as much, telling KweséESPN about Udoka: “If he has to get on you he’ll get on you but he knows how to talk to us, [he] knows how to handle players.”

The former Cowboys quarterback finished last Friday in the 132-man field in the Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship, bogeying the first six holes in a 10-over 82.
“I kind of have an idea of where I really need to put my time in as far as to get better and scoring,” Romo said. “I’m hitting the ball fine, you just have to score.”
Now an NFL analyst for CBS Sports, Romo opened with a 77 on Thursday. At 15-over, he was six shots worse than the next player on the leaderboard and 28 strokes behind leader Brice Garnett.
Garnett followed his opening 63 with a 68 to get to 13-under 131.
“There’s so much golf left, 36 holes, and especially out here guys are going to make charges from way back,” Garnett said. “A lot of birdies are out there. So I’ll just keep my head down, keep plugging and try to have a solid weekend.”
Steve Wheatcroft and Keith Mitchell were a shot back, each after their second 66. Seungsu Han (67) and Xinjun Zhang (68) were 10-under. Hunter Mahan (65) topped the group at 9-under, and Geoff Ogilvy (67) was 8-under.
Portland knows this. On a few possessions, the Blazers shifted Nurkic onto Nikola Mirotic so that Al-Farouq Aminu could guard Davis. Mirotic is in some ways an even worse matchup for Nurkic — a quick-release shooter who ventures even further outside Nurkic’s natural habitat.
Too many teams spot a problematic matchup and let it simmer for a few possessions, hesitant to deviate from their normal offense as if doing so is a sign of weakness. Alvin Gentry and the Pelicans attacked the Mirotic-Nurkic matchup immediately every time they saw it, zipping Mirotic through screens until Nurkic lost touch:
Jets CEO and chairman Christopher Johnson is opposed to trying to legislate the players out of protesting.
“I have some pretty strong feelings about that,” Johnson said. “I don’t approve of changing the current status. I know there’s some discussion of keeping players off the field until after the anthem. I think that that’s a particularly bad idea.”
Johnson felt the Jets came together as an organization after the anthem issue got heated in September. He spoke with the players and would link arms with them during the anthem before every game. He also got involved with the players’ coalition and their efforts to promote social change.

The 49ers gave running back Jerick McKinnon a four-year, $30 million contract, a lot of money for a running back in today’s NFL. McKinnon’s former coach thinks the 49ers will get their money’s worth.
Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said McKinnon is a player he would have loved to continue coaching.
After moving around their own schedule and dealing with a treacherous January slate, which included four stretches of three games in four nights, the Nuggets saw improved shooting percentages. In fact, after losing to Phoenix on Jan. 19, the team held only three practices over the next few weeks, during which they posted a 6-2 record and saw their offensive rating climb to a league-best 113.9 points per 100 possessions.
“Everybody’s been playing fresh and playing fast,” Nuggets guard Gary Harris said then, according to The Daily Camera newspaper, which first reported the surge. “Maybe we might have caught onto something right there.”
Entering the 2017-18 season, in the wake of growing criticism from several star players and health experts, the NBA altered its regular-season slate, eliminating stretches of four games in five days for the first time in league history, reducing five-games-in-seven-days sets and trimming 57 total back-to-backs, among other adjustments while beginning the regular season one week earlier.
He was waived/injured by Minnesota in September and spent time on Carolina’s practice squad during the season. The Jets will see if they can get something more out of Hodges in 2018.
“I don’t even know if it’s psychological,” Popovich said. “It’s a fact. You can count the hours. Especially if you play a TV game, like a ridiculous 8 o’clock game on the West Coast — by the time it finishes, what if you have an overtime? And then you lose an hour going to Denver and then you take that drive from the airport all the way [to downtown], then are you going to shootaround the next day? You take the day off. You don’t do it.”
Indeed, it’s not unusual to see teams having a rest day or two in Denver before facing the Nuggets.
“But here’s the funny thing,” Malone continued. “Last season, the NBA is trying to avoid that situation. They gave us four of those games. Where we had to travel from L.A., San Francisco or Golden State, or Sacramento rather, to come home and play the second night of a back-to-back at home.”

The New York Jets have withdrawn a rule change proposal that would limit pass interference penalties to 15 yards, according to The Washington Post’s Mark Maske. The proposal was gaining momentum , but that apparently quickly dissolved after the competition committee voted it down 6-2 , making the chances of it passing a vote from NFL owners unlikely. The owners of at least 24 teams must approve any rule change. Obviously, the competition committee was against it бн.
He was exceptional. We knew that he was going to be gritty on a really cold night. He showed that tremendous competitiveness, Kapler said.
After the scheduled series opener was postponed Monday by snow, New York improved to 3-1 under its own rookie manager in Callaway.
An embattled Kapler has been taking criticism for heavy use of his relievers last weekend in Atlanta — and a mix-up that led to him summoning one who wasn’t even warmed up. It’s my responsibility, Kapler said before the game. I spent the last 48 hours digging into how to improve our bullpen usage and be really good at it going forward.
It was a shock to the football world when Josh McDaniels spurned the Indianapolis Colts and decided to back out of the deal he agreed upon to become their next head coach and the New England Patriots offensive coordinator has finally broken the silence. The Colts have since moved on from the McDaniels fiasco but fans are still bitter – and rightfully so – after the 41-year-old decided to back out of the deal to be the next head coach.
Miller: As a DH, Ohtani is going to have to hit a lot to stand out. As a pitcher, he’ll have to stand out as a DH to justify the extra strain a two-way role puts on him.
Schoenfield: The same one that most scouts are skeptical about: his hit tool. After his rough spring at the plate, he appeared to consciously shorten his swing in the opener, which resulted in four ground balls to the right side (plus a strikeout). One bounced through for a hit, but to get to his power, Ohtani is going to have to prove that he can handle the hard stuff inside.

Ndamukong Suh is back on the market, three years and $60 million since the last time he was on the market. How long will he stay on the market?
It’s still unclear, but the process could begin with the Saints bringing Suh to town for a visit. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Saints are working to bring Suh in for a visit.
That’s a strange caveat to be applied at a time when reports on visits are unequivocal. But it could be a sign that Suh has certain financial expectations that he wants any interested team to be willing to meet before he’ll even entertain the possibility of signing there.
The Patriots are quite familiar with Woodhead after he spent three seasons in New England between 2010 and 2012. They have James White and the recently re-signed Rex Burkhead in the backfield, but Dion Lewis left for Tennessee as a free agent.
Atlanta has Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman returning as their top two backs. They did not tender Terron Ward as an exclusive rights free agent.
Woodhead missed eight games with a hamstring injury, missed 14 games with a torn ACL in 2016 and was limited to three games in 2014 due to a broken leg, so durability hasn’t been a strong suit. When healthy, he has remained a strong part of the passing game as a target out of the backfield.
Even if he is a full go against the Giants on Sunday, Escobar’s placement behind Swaim on the depth chart could mean a loss of playing time, and his fantasy production always be hit-or- with the remarkably consistent Witten taking most of the snaps at tight end. There is one organization now-the Southern Leadership Conference, organization that grew directly out of the Montgomery situation and through which we seek to bring together leaders from all of the communities the South, discuss the common problems and ways of implementing the Supreme Court decision through non-violent methods.
The first and most important reason is having to choose either moving his family that includes eight children to a new home and community or keeping the family where it is while being away from that family for extended stretches of time during football.
According to the contradicting reports, there was no family function and there was no heroic act.The Jackets are back at it tomorrow night at home against the Ottawa Senators.I ‘t think the experience of playing the NHL means nothing this.

Kirk Cousins did not force the Minnesota Vikings to switch restaurants during their free agent visit, contrary to a report.
Prior to Cousins’ visit with the Vikings, NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero reported that the quarterback was on a variation of the Tom Brady diet. Because of that, the Viking supposedly were going to dine at a different restaurant from the usual steakhouse where they take players.
It was also smart for the Jets to go all-in at quarterback this offseason. Signing Teddy Bridgewater to a one-year deal was a boom-or-bust move, but it was worth the risk. Their trade for the No. 3 overall pick was controversial because they gave up a lot, but they’re now in line to get no worse than the third quarterback in the class. If they’re in love with the quarterback who falls to them and properly develop him, the cost won’t be remembered as an issue.
The Seahawks couldn’t sign the deal because Walter Jones would’ve made more than Hutchinson, and a fully guaranteed contract worth $49 million would’ve crippled the team.
A more common example was the Jacksonville Jaguars signing center Alex Mack to a front-loaded offer sheet with an opt-out clause. The Cleveland Browns matched the offer, but it ultimately led to Mack leaving and becoming a free agent two years later.
The Bears are among the league leaders in cap space. Any number the Packers were comfortable paying is one that Chicago didn’t have much issue matching.
Chopra on whether he has doubts that Brady will play in 2018: “No. You know, I’ve seen Tom’s process, and I think there’s very little doubt that he will eventually, this season, sort of find that thing that will get him back and really amped for next season. This past year was very unsatisfying in terms of how it ended, and so I don’t necessarily envision him leaving that as the last taste, you know, like I said to hold on.”

Plus, there’s the Max Pacioretty case. With a year left on his deal, he could either bring a large haul in a trade or provide top-tier goal scoring for the future if he were to re-sign. The Canadiens also currently have five picks in the first two rounds of the draft.
The Rockets took a seven-point lead into halftime. Stephen Curry turned in a poor first half, going 2 of 11. He finished with 19 points, the lowest since he came back from an ankle injury that kept him out for about a month earlier this season. The win was mostly earned down low, with the Rockets outrebounding the Warriors 46 to 33. The Warriors were also forced into 19 turnovers, with Curry committing six of them.
Trevor Ariza and Gerald Green missed the game for the Rockets. They are serving two-game suspensions for the Rockets’ locker room incident after a game against the Clippers.
Mason made his first appearance since Jan. 9th, when he was sidelined with a concussion. The veteran will play important minutes down the stretch as Winnipeg looks to lighten Connor Hellebuyck’s workload before the playoffs. The franchise hopes to win a playoff series for the first time in its history.
Winnipeg teammates Mark Schiefele and Blake Wheeler collided in the first period. Schiefele initially returned to action but was later ruled out for the game with an upper-body injury. His last shift ended with 3:58 remaining in the second period.
Now, can they beat them in a seven-game series? Maybe not, but the Rockets certainly have all of the tools to compete with the defending champs in a potential Western Conference finals.
“We can play a little bit,” Chris Paul told ESPN following the game. “It’s not anything big or anything like that, I mean, it’s January for god sakes, you know what I mean? So, thank God we came out healthy.”
The only question health-wise for the Rockets was James Harden who is just two games removed from missing seven games with a leg injury. The MVP candidate is on a minutes restriction for Houston, but as the clock wound down Saturday, Harden was still on the court, and for good reason. He hit the 3-pointer that put Houston up two possessions late in the game.

The Eagles led the league in quality touchdown celebrations this season. But they didn’t give us a single dang choreographed celebration in their thrilling win over the Patriots in Super Bowl LII.
That’s not too far off from the This is Us regular 9 p.m. ET broadcast slot. But if you’re hoping to get to bed early, you might want to set your DVR to cover everything from 10 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., just in case.
Tampa goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy, who got the night off against the Senators, has won eight of his past 11 starts. He has given up two or fewer goals in 28 of his 49 starts this season. He leads the league with seven shutouts this season to tie the franchise record (six of them on the road), set by Nikolai Khabibulin in 2001-02.
The Lightning had a 4-1 lead against the Senators and hung on to win. Tampa coach Jon Cooper will be looking for a little bit more of a killer instinct against the Canadiens.
We’re just at that time of the year, especially when the teams are right on our heels, that we’ve be got to be a little bit more responsible, Cooper told NHL.com. For a large part of the year, we were doing that. For whatever reason, we’ve taken our foot off the gas in that regard.
The pre-Super Bowl interview has become a tradition over recent years. It originated with George W. Bush. Barack Obama carried it on starting in 2009, and he did one each year of his presidency.
Basketball commentator Charles Barkley joked during the TNT halftime show that he needed a cigarette after Fergie’s performance.
Former Lakers star Shaquille O’Neal leaped to Fergie’s defense, saying: Fergie, I love you. It was different. It was sexy. I liked it. Leave her alone.
Others on social media weren’t as kind, with criticism of the performance outpacing the positive reviews.
On Sunday, he couldn’t tap into that magic once more to get his Patriots a sixth Lombardi Trophy.

Elway is calling for separating politics and football after writing a letter earlier this year on Broncos stationery to the Senate Judiciary Committee recommending the approval of Neil M. Gorsuch, then a nominee to the Supreme Court. Elway is not alone in expressing those sentiments.
“That’s for you political beatniks to ponder,” Pittsburgh Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin said at his news conference Wednesday. “We’re a football group, man. You’re asking us about middle ground. You’re asking us about right or left. We’re a football group. That’s what you guys don’t understand. We don’t care, largely professionally speaking. We have personal opinions, yes. Professionally? We’re about to kick a ball off.”
Ben McAdoo, New York Giants: The Giants fired McAdoo following a 2-10 start that saw the team briefly bench starting quarterback Eli Manning. McAdoo’s firing comes less than two seasons into his tenure and just a year after helping guide Big Blue to a playoff berth in 2016. The 40-year-old finished with a 13-15 record as the Giants’ coach.
Mike Mularkey, Tennessee Titans: Mularkey and the Titans parted ways after failing to come to an agreement about their future together, the Titans announced on their website. Mularkey could be a candidate to take over the Cleveland Browns’ offensive coordinator role, Rapoport reported.
Jack Del Rio, Oakland Raiders: Del Rio told reporters after the game that Raiders owner Mark Davis relieved him of his duties following Oakland’s 30-10 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. The firing completes a stark turnaround from a playoff season in 2016 that brought plenty of optimism into this campaign, in which Del Rio’s Raiders failed to meet expectations.
“I’m one that really believes in standing for the flag,” Denver Broncos executive and Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway said in a statement released earlier this week. “I understand the players and the way they felt from the comments that were made earlier in the week.
Brian Gaine, Houston Texans: He will take over for Rick Smith while he is on a leave of absence to tend to his wife, who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer.

Veteran official Gene Steratore will serve as the referee and head the officiating crew for Super Bowl 52, the NFL announced Wednesday.
Yes, that’s the same Steratore who caught the attention of fans in December during a game between the Cowboys and Raiders. After Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott ran the ball on a critical fourth-down play, Steratore used an index card to help determine a first down. He later issued a lengthy explanation on the card’s purpose, saying he had already made up his mind but he used the card to reaffirm his decision.
Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie interviewed two minority candidates — Oakland tight ends coach Bobby Johnson and USC offensive coordinator Tee Martin — before the team officially announced Gruden’s hiring Saturday. Prior to Gruden’s official hiring, the Fritz Pollard Alliance initially believed the Raiders were in compliance with the Rooney Rule.
Even with Seattle falling short of the postseason and Bennett not getting any younger, he’s not publicly longing to skip town or retire.
Yeah I’m 100 percent committed, he said. I think I’m in my prime. I want to play as long as I can. There are so many great players on this team and it’s a great organization.
I believe (Cleveland GM John) Dorsey will block out the noise and take the best guy (in Allen),” an unnamed executive told the Cleveland Plain-Dealer. And the Browns will be good very soon.”
This same executive told the Plain-Dealer before the 2016 draft that if Cleveland would take Carson Wentz with their first pick they would be set for the next 15 years. The Browns didn’t, and the results speak for themselves. Wentz would have been the MVP this year had he not suffered a season-ending knee injury, and Cleveland went 0-16.
Allen is the most polarizing player in the 2018 draft class. He has arm strength comparable to John Elway, a similar build to Wentz, and a virtually blank canvas with which to work. He was a junior college QB before going to Wyoming and he hasn’t taken a crazy amount of reps, so teams can develop him their own way.
