Elway is calling for separating politics and football after writing a letter earlier this year on Broncos stationery to the Senate Judiciary Committee recommending the approval of Neil M. Gorsuch, then a nominee to the Supreme Court. Elway is not alone in expressing those sentiments.

“That’s for you political beatniks to ponder,” Pittsburgh Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin said at his news conference Wednesday. “We’re a football group, man. You’re asking us about middle ground. You’re asking us about right or left. We’re a football group. That’s what you guys don’t understand. We don’t care, largely professionally speaking. We have personal opinions, yes. Professionally? We’re about to kick a ball off.”

Ben McAdoo, New York Giants: The Giants fired McAdoo following a 2-10 start that saw the team briefly bench starting quarterback Eli Manning. McAdoo’s firing comes less than two seasons into his tenure and just a year after helping guide Big Blue to a playoff berth in 2016. The 40-year-old finished with a 13-15 record as the Giants’ coach.

Mike Mularkey, Tennessee Titans: Mularkey and the Titans parted ways after failing to come to an agreement about their future together, the Titans announced on their website. Mularkey could be a candidate to take over the Cleveland Browns’ offensive coordinator role, Rapoport reported.

Jack Del Rio, Oakland Raiders: Del Rio told reporters after the game that Raiders owner Mark Davis relieved him of his duties following Oakland’s 30-10 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. The firing completes a stark turnaround from a playoff season in 2016 that brought plenty of optimism into this campaign, in which Del Rio’s Raiders failed to meet expectations.

“I’m one that really believes in standing for the flag,” Denver Broncos executive and Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway said in a statement released earlier this week. “I understand the players and the way they felt from the comments that were made earlier in the week.

Veteran official Gene Steratore will serve as the referee and head the officiating crew for Super Bowl 52, the NFL announced Wednesday.

Yes, that’s the same Steratore who caught the attention of fans in December during a game between the Cowboys and Raiders. After Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott ran the ball on a critical fourth-down play, Steratore used an index card to help determine a first down. He later issued a lengthy explanation on the card’s purpose, saying he had already made up his mind but he used the card to reaffirm his decision.

Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie interviewed two minority candidates — Oakland tight ends coach Bobby Johnson and USC offensive coordinator Tee Martin — before the team officially announced Gruden’s hiring Saturday. Prior to Gruden’s official hiring, the Fritz Pollard Alliance initially believed the Raiders were in compliance with the Rooney Rule.

Even with Seattle falling short of the postseason and Bennett not getting any younger, he’s not publicly longing to skip town or retire.

Yeah I’m 100 percent committed, he said. I think I’m in my prime. I want to play as long as I can. There are so many great players on this team and it’s a great organization.

I believe (Cleveland GM John) Dorsey will block out the noise and take the best guy (in Allen),” an unnamed executive told the Cleveland Plain-Dealer. And the Browns will be good very soon.”

This same executive told the Plain-Dealer before the 2016 draft that if Cleveland would take Carson Wentz with their first pick they would be set for the next 15 years. The Browns didn’t, and the results speak for themselves. Wentz would have been the MVP this year had he not suffered a season-ending knee injury, and Cleveland went 0-16.

Allen is the most polarizing player in the 2018 draft class. He has arm strength comparable to John Elway, a similar build to Wentz, and a virtually blank canvas with which to work. He was a junior college QB before going to Wyoming and he hasn’t taken a crazy amount of reps, so teams can develop him their own way.patriots_143_4a7035a0a33d842f-180x180

His sack total ties him with Aaron Donald, his teammate Mario Addison, and Terrell Suggs for 11th in the NFL. Not bad for a guy who’s about to turn 38 later this month.

Knowing Seattle GM John Schneider, if he thinks he can get a tackle like Brown, just coming off a long holdout in Houston, and the most vocal of the Houston veterans against owner Bob McNair after McNair’s “inmates running the prison” remark in ESPN The Magazine last week, he’ll find another way. The Seahawks are snug up against the salary cap, and if they want Brown, they may have to redo Brown’s deal and redo some of their own contracts. That’s, of course, if Schneider can find a deal to satisfy the Texans by the 4 p.m. ET trade deadline Tuesday. My money’s on Schneider.

Joe Staley’s overpriced in San Francisco (and suffered a reported suborbital fracture under his right eye on Sunday), and Cordy Glenn not likely to be freed up in Buffalo. It might be Brown or Colt Anthony Castonzo … and Brown’s better. We shall see.

Wilson made sure he found Watson on the field after the game. “He’s a special, special player, and I’m going to love watching him play in the next few years,” Wilson said. “He was so good today, so special. I told him on the field, ‘God is good. Keep putting the hard work in. It’ll keep showing.’”

What’s most striking about the Vikings’ season is how resilient they were amid multiple setbacks. Sam Bradford lasted all of one week before a knee injury ended his season, but Keenum stepped up to have the best season of his career. Electric rookie Dalvin Cook tore his ACL after just four games, but Latavius Murray and Jerick McKinnon have formed a solid running back duo. Adam Thielen led the team with 91 catches and 1,276 receiving yards, helping everyone forget that 2016 first-rounder Laquon Treadwell was a non-factor.

Alexander is president and Founder of the ACES Foundation, spokesman for the American Diabetes Association, PLAY 60 Advocate, Character Playbook Ambassador. He currently mentors a local inner-city high school football team about making good decisions on and off the field.

He organized a day of community service, where 42 Bills players spent their day off at five different organizations throughout the Buffalo community, making a difference for youth athletes and students.

Throughout the remainder of the season, he will organize town hall meetings with leaders from the Buffalo community and a team-voted community organization award will be presented at each home game.wings_1946

A former employee of a food service contractor at Lambeau Field was arrested Friday after ramming his car into multiple vehicles and driving through the loading dock at the Green Bay Packers’ stadium.

Green Bay Police Chief Andrew Smith told reporters at a news conference that the man was fired earlier this month after a dispute with a co-worker. The 20-year-old suspect sought out his former co-worker in the parking lot at Lambeau on Friday afternoon and rammed the victim’s vehicle with his white Trans-Am.

The victim then fled on foot and the suspect pursued him down a ramp toward the loading dock at the southeast corner of the stadium. Vehicle access to that area normally is restricted but a gate was up to make way for another vehicle and the suspect drove down into the stadium before eventually crashing into a storage room inside Lambeau.

He was on foot when police officers arrived on the scene some five minutes after the initial 911 call and was arrested without incident, Smith said.

Smith said initial calls to police suggested there was an active shooter on the scene, but no weapons have been found and the public is in no danger. The county’s bomb squad and the fire department’s hazmat units were checking the suspect’s car, which remained inside the stadium, as a precaution.

The Eagles, Vikings, Steelers, Patriots and Jaguars have clinched playoff berths, meaning 14 teams will be fighting for seven playoff spots as Weeks 16 and 17 play out. The Rams, Saints and Chiefs are close. The Seahawks and Cowboys, who will play what amounts to an elimination game Sunday in Dallas, are facing slim chances to make the postseason.

Haskell’s Miami-based attorney didn’t immediately respond when USA Today sought comment on Moon’s claim of money being demanded.

In the lawsuit, Haskell, 32, accuses Moon of, among other things, grabbing her crotch during a business trip to Seattle and slipping a drug into a drink during a trip to Mexico. He denies those accusations.

“I know this subject of harassment and assault and different things in the workplace by women is a very serious subject right now,” Moon said Thursday on KIRO Radio in Seattle, “and a lot of women have held a lot of these feelings in for a long time, and are coming out and expressing these feelings, and they should be applauded for that. And I applaud those women for doing that. But in this particular situation, in my case, it just doesn’t apply.”packers_138_810a64683e1c50d4-180x180

This was the best unit in the league last season, but personnel shake-ups from last season and injuries have derailed the performance this year. In the offseason, right tackle Doug Free retired and left guard Ronald Leary moved on to the Broncos in free agency. La’el Collins and Jonathan Cooper have been downgrades.

Left tackle Tyron Smith has battled back and groin injuries and has missed two games — an absence that everyone noticed. Right guard Zack Martin has been dealing with a concussion. Smith, Martin, and right tackle Collins are all listed as questionable for Thursday’s game.

Charlotte shot 53 percent from the field against one of the league’s best defensive teams. The Hornets made 13 of 25 3-point attempts while improving to 2-10 on the road.

“We played together, we moved the ball, our defensive intensity was great and when we needed a big play, they came up with the big plays,” interim coach Stephen Silas said.

The game was tied at 66 in the third quarter when Charlotte went on a run and never relinquished momentum. A 3-pointer by Williams made it 74-66, leading to a Thunder timeout.

Charlotte kept right on rolling. A 3-pointer by Frank Kaminsky put the Hornets up 86-68, and a layup by Kidd-Gilchrist made it a 20-point game. The Hornets made 7 of 10 3-pointers in the quarter to go up 92-74 at the end of the period.

Perhaps more than any other place in America, Louisville came to embody the contradictions of college athletics — a multibillion-dollar industry built on amateur athletes.

The Spurs listed forward Kawhi Leonard as probable for Tuesday’s road matchup at Dallas, which means it’s likely that the two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year will make his season debut against the Mavericks.

The club originally targeted Saturday’s game at Phoenix as a potential debut for Leonard, but sources on Friday said the forward wanted “a couple more days” to recover from the right quadriceps tendinopathy that has kept him out of all 27 of the Spurs’ games thus far this season.

“Whoever is not there is not there. We don’t worry about him [Leonard] or think about it too much. We’ve got to take care of as much of the business as we can, just like Boston is doing,” he said. “In the meantime, a lot of the guys are getting time. We’re playing a lot of different people, a lot of different combinations. Some nights it doesn’t work out really well. Other nights, it looks really good. But I think down the stretch it will help us.”chargers_001

Drew Stanton vs. Tom Savage is the worst quarterback matchup in quite some time. Now a battle between offensive-minded coaches Bruce Arians and Bill O’Brien becomes an ugly slugfest. The Cardinals simply have the better, healthier defense to keep the Texans reeling.

The Ravens will be at full strength offensively coming off a bye, and their defense also can slow down the Packers’ running game and cause some pressure and coverage issues for Brett Hundley. Joe Flacco has one of his better games with his receivers, while the offensive limitations get to Green Bay again in a third straight home loss.

The Eagles’ drive stalls and they punt it back to Dallas with 3:14 to play.

To the NFL’s credit, last year’s game in Mexico City turned out to be a great event, with an entertaining game between the Raiders and Texans to boot. This could duplicate or surpass it if both fan bases show up and show out. The Patriots are as motivated as usual and appear to have smoothed out their early-season glitches. The Raiders couldn’t be more motivated, hanging around the fringes of the playoff chase but also within view of the AFC West lead despite their terrible recent losing streak.

The debate in Dallas is about who the team misses most: Ezekiel Elliott, Tyron Smith, Sean Lee or Dan Bailey. That all four could miss this one makes the outlook pretty bleak. The Eagles are due for a good test of how they handle success, but odds are they won’t get it in this one. Dak Prescott better brace himself.

Does it mean the “Legion of Boom” will suddenly go bust without its charter member? Not if Thomas and Chancellor remain intact in the middle, flanked by Wagner, the game’s best cover linebacker. It will be sound, but by no means will it still be supersonic.sharks_158

The Eagles enjoyed a bye last week, resting with the NFL’s best record.

Ajayi has played just one game with the Eagles after getting traded from the Dolphins. He handled just eight carries in his Eagles debut, but amassed 77 yards and a touchdown.

Philadelphia also has LaGarrette Blount and explosive rookie Corey Clement, who scored three touchdowns in a Week 9 win over the Broncos. Ajayi became a proven workhorse during his time with the Dolphins, and he could soon carve out a similar role with the Eagles.

They could work out a new deal that lets him retire as a Seahawk, which would qualify him for having his No. 25 jersey retired if he reached the Hall of Fame. They could release him. What happens in free agency and the draft could affect their thinking.

For a team with aspirations of another long playoff run, managing minutes this time of year is solid long-range thinking. No Celtics player ranks in the top 45 of minutes per game this season, with Horford at No. 46 and Irving at No. 63 (31.5 minutes per game) after Monday’s win.
The thing that is cool about it is, it’s not just the player part, but the person you are getting. Kam didn’t test off the charts, he wasn’t a pretty guy, wasn’t the most athletic, but just a football player through and through, which ended up being the case with all three of them.”

Working the waiver wire is pivotal to succeeding in fantasy basketball. With so many games, injuries and endless shifts in rotations throughout the season, we’ll need to source stats from free agency to maximize our imaginary rosters.

3. Game 5 of the Yankees-Indians series averaged 7,610,000 viewers across FS1 (7,261,000), FOX Deportes (207,000) and FOX Sports GO (142,000), according to the network. The game peaked from 11:15 to 11:30 PM ET with 9,175,000 viewers on FS1. The network said it was the most-watched ALDS game on any network since 2011.

A willingness to entertain competition for the last spot or two on your fantasy hoops roster can prove rewarding, even though it’s difficult to open up space this early in the season. The final few rounds of a draft are often used for speculation on sleepers, so it can help to consider those end-of-bench players as in direct competition with the talent floating in free agency.

At one point late in Sunday’s race, Johnson was put a lap down by Hendrick Motorsports teammate Elliott.

“We were just terrible all day,” Johnson said. “Oh, what a bummer. We had high hopes for this weekend.”

WOMP, WOMP: Kyle Larson had been considered a strong championship contender until his engine blew in last week’s elimination race at Kansas. Now out of the playoffs, he wasn’t competitive Sunday, crashed and finished 37th.

“Another Martinsville for us. I’ve got to figure out how to get around this place,” Larson said. He has one career top-10 finish at the track.

The NFL trade deadline typically does not have the intrigue or drama found in other leagues.

The 49ers appear to view Garoppolo as their quarterback of the future after giving up what will be a pick at the top of the second round in 2018 to get him, plus the knowledge that they’ll have to sign him to a big contract given his upcoming free agent status.

Garoppolo in “Madden NFL 18” is already ranked in the top 30 QBs with a 77 Overall rating. His “Quick” development trait in Franchise Mode means he could become an above-average player.

Garoppolo has only started two games in his career, though, which explains why he has never been able to break out of that range where all inexperienced QBs reside in “Madden.”

Bryce Love, Stanford, RB: Love’s 10.3 yards per carry is his best argument for the Heisman. It doesn’t help his cause that his games are getting seen by a lot fewer people than Barkley’s, but Notre Dame’s domination of USC this weekend ensures he’ll have three marquee games remaining—at Washington State in two weeks, against Washington the week after and then the season finale against the Irish. He should be able to pad his stats even more next week against an Oregon State D that is No. 102 in the nation against the run.

New York took over in the third quarter and built the lead to 17 on several occasions in the period.

Sunday marked the anniversary of James’ professional debut in 2003 against Sacramento. He had 25 points with nine assists and six rebounds.
